Bland is banished in this townhouse – designer Debra De Lorenzo has transformed the main suite into an Art Deco haven for the owners.
Townhouses built in the late ‘90s, early 2000s are not generally known for their character – and it is often considered a particularly bland period for interior design, with neutrals the order of the day.
The owners of this Khandallah, Wellington townhouse built around that time wanted a different look for their home, says interior designer Debra De Lorenzo.
“The couple wanted a beautiful bedroom and ensuite,” she says. “They loved Art Deco and had some nice furniture downstairs, so that provided the starting point.”

The design started with the beautiful Catherine Martin wallpaper – De Lorenzo found emerald-green tiles to match. The bedhead was custom made.
